n8n vs Zapier vs Make: an honest enterprise comparison

We benchmark cost, observability, and governance across the leading automation platforms.

The automation inflection point

For most startups, Zapier is the default choice. It's incredibly easy to use and integrates with almost everything. But as your business scales, you'll inevitably hit what we call the automation inflection point. This is when your workflows move from simple 'if this then that' triggers to complex, multi-stage pipelines involving conditional logic, custom APIs, and massive data volumes.

At this stage, Zapier's per-task pricing model transforms from a minor operational expense into a significant financial burden.

Why we recommend n8n for enterprise scale

n8n operates on a fundamentally different model. Because it's source-available, you can self-host it on your own infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or a simple VPS). This provides three critical advantages for enterprise deployments:

  • Fixed Costs: Instead of paying per execution step, you pay for the compute resources of your server. Whether you run 10 workflows a day or 100,000, your infrastructure cost remains flat (typically under $50/month).
  • Data Privacy: Your customer data never leaves your VPC. For healthcare, fintech, or any SOC 2 compliant business, routing sensitive PII through a third-party SaaS platform like Make or Zapier is often a non-starter.
  • Developer Experience: n8n allows you to write custom JavaScript directly within nodes, manage workflows via JSON for version control, and integrate seamlessly with your existing CI/CD pipelines.

When to use Make (formerly Integromat)

Make sits comfortably between Zapier and n8n. It offers more complex routing and iteration capabilities than Zapier out-of-the-box, with a better visual editor. If you lack the engineering resources to self-host and maintain an n8n instance, Make is a powerful cloud alternative—though you will still face tiered pricing constraints as you scale.
